So much news! Read on…

SYMPHONY NOVA SCOTIA: CONTEST ALERT!

After months of prep – I’ll finally be in Halifax this week with Symphony Nova Scotia rehearsing for our big shows this Friday November 23rd and Saturday Nov. 24th!

And we are nearing a sell-out – so if you’d like a chance to win two spots on my guest list – write us to say why you and a guest would love to be there – we’ll notify the lucky winner Thursday end of day! (sarah@sarahslean.com)

The first half of the program, I will be at the piano playing orchestrated versions of songs from Night Bugs to Metaphysics – including new arrangements by my excellent colleagues Kevin Lau, Virginia Kilbertus and Aaron Tsang. For the second half we’ll perform “Ecstasy” – a three part song cycle composed Christos Hatzis, text by yours truly.

In 2012, Christos wrote the incredible song cycle “Lamento” for me to sing for my Symphony Nova Scotia debut.

The CBC filmed and recorded this and it was a great success – I’ve now sung it with four other orchestras! But both Christos and I thought it was an unusually dark and tragic piece given the bright and hopeful spiritual worldview we both share, so he asked me to work on text for a companion piece – something more positive and life-affirming… well – that’s what we’re premiering this weekend!! “Ecstasy” is quite a moving and dramatic creation… I have given it a sub-title – “3 part mystical awakening”. See if you agree! The CBC will be filming and recording this as well.

A NEW MUSICAL!

Another wonderful thing to announce! I’ve been asked to write the music for the stage musical adaptation of the award-winning film. It’s just a beautiful, beautiful film and I’m so thrilled to be working with a great team of people on this story!! Oh the songs I will write for this… *swoon!*
More news on this front in a few months…

DOWNLOADABLE SHEET MUSIC!

That’s right – at LONG LAST IT IS HERE! We will have a wide selection of sheet music available for download starting next week now – direct from the website!
I will be rolling out almost everything we have from my long hours of transcription for last year’s Pledgemusic orders (THANK YOU!) My end goal is an “anthology” scorebook (physical) ready in 2019.
OMG! *jumping up and down*

CLASSICAL COMPOSING – PIANO QUARTET

The Ensemble Made in Canada commissioned 14 composers to write piano quartets for the provinces and waterways of Canada.
I was invited to compose, and I chose a province dear to my heart – Newfoundland! The ensemble has been touring all over the country and performed in Toronto on Thursday evening.
Here’s a photo of me with some great composers Kevin Lau and Andrew Downing.

ARRANGEMENTS FOR CHOIR!

I was hired to arrange two songs for the amazing New Choir from Toronto! If you’d like to hear them, their big concert is January 26th next year at the Masonic Temple.

CBC RADIO HOSTING

I’ve been hosting radio at the CBC! One episode of Drive, a full week of Shift (both have already aired) and also a full week of Tempo, the classical show, which will air later this year / early next year.

HOSPITAL SHOW SHOOTING SOON

“Everybody’s on TV” will be the theme song for this hilarious new comedy, developed by Adam G. Reid – and I’ll also be scoring the new episodes they’re shooting this December. Woo!

HOLIDAY BUNDLES COMING!

In a few weeks, we’ll be clearing out the vaults at Maplemusic to make way for some new merchandise – get ready for some amazing Christmas deals!
Bundles galore – including ORIGINAL video costumes, perhaps an original painting or two, and some exclusive stuff that won’t be printed again. Squee!

Speaking of holiday’s, I will be joining Andy Kim at his 14th Annual Christmas show on December 20th at the The Burlington Performing Arts Centre. I will be singing four songs for charity.

EN DIRECT DE L’UNIVERS – KARINE VANASSE

What an incredible concert with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra on Saturday March 3rd!

Sarah sang a full selection of Mitchell songs from the acclaimed albums “Travelogue” and “Both Sides Now”, as arranged by multi-Grammy Award winner Vince Mendoza – who also led the orchestra. They were joined by legendary jazz musician Peter Erskine, celebrated bassist Edwin Livingston and the crazy-talented Calgarian Mark DeJong on sax.

This landmark live performance was the first of its kind in Canada – and the first ever live performance of these scores – WOW!
Needless to say, Sarah was excited.

Metaphysics was released on April 7th via Cadence Music/Fontana North and features two CBC Radio 2 – Top 20 songs Sarah and Perfect Sky. This summer will see Sarah perform on Canada Day as part of the celebrations in Hamilton, as well as a performance at the Interstellar Rodeo in Winnipeg. On October 6th she will kick off her fall tour in Vancouver, followed by dates in Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina, and Ottawa to name a few (full details below). In conjunction with the tour announcement – Sarah has released a beautiful new video, filmed on the streets of Toronto, for her song, Every Rhythm Is The Beat. “This song was inspired by my chance encounter with an extraordinary 31-year-old man on a GO Train several years ago. It ignited a two-year long correspondence,” says Sarah. “And though that correspondence did not ultimately have a happy ending, it did bring into full light the incredible interconnectedness of all lives.”

Sarah continues, “In the ever-changing, often bewildering maze of identity politics, we all want to figure out what groups we belong to, bear allegiance to and take refuge in… but we often forget that there’s really only one “group” in the grand scheme. We’re all distant relatives, no matter how different our bodies, creeds, colours, behaviours. We all have the same blueprint and experience consciousness via the same mysterious, sophisticated biological system… We all feel, and suffer, and love. Remembering that is enough to awaken the compassion inside all of us that today’s world can sometimes lull to sleep.”

So, as you may have heard, last April I was Jessica Chastain’s piano-pounding body double in the Guillermo Del Torro thriller “Crimson Peak”. Crazy, right? Let me tell you, it was more than a fluke opportunity – it was more like a ripple in space/time…

In April 2014 I received two emails out of the blue from two distant acquaintances – the first, from a guitarist I had hired probably 5 years ago, the second, from a voice teacher in the city I had worked with once a few months prior. They both described the production’s urgent need for a female pianist of Ms. Chastain’s dimensions, with long, slim fingers, who could play the last page of Chopin’s Ballade in G Minor convincingly. I sent in my measurements, photos of my hands, and a quick recording of the Ballade. They called me into wardrobe for a fitting the next day. I’ve been on movie sets before, I even had an acting agent for a while, but I’d never been called in to do anything remotely like this – it came, quite literally, from out of nowhere. What struck me as particularly surreal and eerie was that I was the lead’s double, a shadow self, a twin, a mirror image. I was a walking echo… Carl Jung would have had opinions here I’m sure.

I was fitted into exact replicas of Jessica’s full period-piece gown (including corset, skirt, collar, bustle), wig, and jewelry. The skirt and bustle weighed about 20 pounds. Nothing unusual occurred to me during the fittings or makeup sessions – the crazy, mind-bending realization came only during the piano scene where I took Jessica’s place for a few seconds to play, and then stepped out to watch the next scenes on the monitor.

The set was one of the lavish ballrooms in Casa Loma, filled to capacity with characters in gorgeous period regalia. The evil main character and her brother are hosting a lavish party and at one point in the evening, she sits at the piano to perform for her guests as they dance. Enter Slean.

Surrounding the wildly ornate piano was a string quintet of men in tuxedos with perfectly combed mustaches, tiny round spectacles and pristine white gloves. That’s when I started thinking, “Wow, this is a bit odd. What are the chances of me being asked to play with a string ensemble? It’s the way I’ve been performing for the last 4 years… And in this time period too, with which I’ve been enamoured for almost all my adult life? And in a red gown?” Red gowns have figured into my art and music since Night Bugs way back in 2002. Recall the Sweet Ones video? My painting on the back of the album? Press photos for the Baroness? Red gowns red gowns red gowns.

When I finished my take I stood watching the monitor to witness the next scene – Jessica turns around on the piano bench, as if she had just played, and stares malevolently into the camera. When these exact motions unfolded on the screen, I actually gasped out loud. I quite literally clapped my hand over my mouth. The very scene I was looking at, I had PAINTED over TEN YEARS PRIOR, in exquisite detail. The dress, the piano surrounded by musicians, the precise pose, the hair, everything. It turns out, as I thought about it, I’ve painted this character numerous times in my life and always in a red dress almost EXACTLY like the red dress I was wearing at that moment. But this – the whole carefully orchestrated scene from my imagination – right in front of my eyes… it was mind-bending.

I had chills. I found photos of the painting in my phone and started to show some members of the crew, who were visibly gobsmacked.

I was then talking to Jessica (yep, just chatting away with Jessica, my bestie.. 😉 ) and she said “this sort of thing happens on Guillaume’s sets all the time”.

What?! Then (and this still kills me to this day) Jessica tells me her character’s name in the film. Lucille. No big deal, right? Except,

THE BARONESS Lucille. I’m not kidding.

“The Baroness” was an alter ego I created in 2002 or so, as a painting for my major label debut (see below). I hadn’t named her at that time, but this character has lived within me as a kind of fuel source – she was the boldness and juice I required to be able to get on stage and perform. When I was younger, the attention I received for my music rattled my psyche significantly. I felt I needed this protection. Later, in 2006-7 or so, as I was writing a new album (mostly in Paris) I named her “The Baroness”, which was eventually the title of that recording. What could have possessed a shy girl from Pickering to select this name as an alter ego, dress her this way, paint her repeatedly, sing from that energy, and to rely on her vivid presence? What are the odds that I would MEET this character on the earthly plane?! Here are some of the images that blew me away. First – me in the costume.

MINI TOUR DIARIES: LIMITED EDITION
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED Saturday, September 14th, 2013

Ever wonder what it`s like to be on tour on foreign soil – strange new places everywhere you turn? During the month of September while on tour in Europe, Sarah will be creating a limited number of mini-tour diaries out of pocket-sized journals (from our pals at EcoJot)!

Sarah is going to collect her thoughts, scribbles, prophetic tea-bag tags, airline ticket stubs, spontaneous paintings, new lyric snippets on a napkin – you name it – into a beautiful, totally unique 3″ × 4″ treasure that will be yours to keep. A little sketch of the town hall in Dunvegan? A doodle of Ian Kelly`s bedhead? A haiku inspired by the Dublin streets? Or perhaps the business card of her favourite bistro in Paris? The possibilities are endless… and each one will be different. Plus, with all that work to do, you’ll help Ms. Slean stay out of trouble. 😉

100% of the proceeds will be going to our international musician friends the Cairn Quartet (Glasgow) and The Fyrebird Quartet (Paris)!

Ecojot is a paper company that goes the extra mile for sustainability and giving back – the journals are 100% recycled paper, Made in Canada, and their charitable program generously provides school supplies to children all over Africa. Journals are blank paper, 50 pages, 3 × 4 inches.

Sarah can only take as many overseas as her carry-on baggage will allow – so we will have just 35 of these beauties for sale. Get yours before they’re gone!

About Theatre 20
With an objective to cultivate and promote Canadian talent through their story-driven musicals, Theatre 20 exposes the raw talents of writers and composers with simple, yet pure storytelling.
Sarah Sleantag:sarahslean.com,2005:Post/64047542015-02-01T16:55:00-05:002020-08-07T16:59:21-04:00AND THE DAYS GREW LONGER…
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED Monday, June 9th, 2014,

2014 you are finally here… I didn’t even think about you until half way through the year. Then the appointed hour finally came, 2013 exploded, and I waited for you madly, high-pitched and half-crazed, squeezing still, as still as my whirling mind would allow, like wincing hotly through a dental procedure. Much falsehood has been painfully shed.

We can’t lie to ourselves, passioneers. What we may consent to as an innocuous back-room deal – a harmless enough compromise the head makes with the heart – it will expand and expand until The Baroness in you rages into the room on a tidal wave of skirts and with one crimson cry razes the whole house of cards.

We were not meant to whisper over embroidery needles. We do not sleep in glass castles and wake up to glass slippers, no. There is red in us. So red it shocks the eyes. I know this. Every moon I am reminded. And we know when we are rotting. If the mind refuses to admit this, the body will turn up the volume. It has ways, ingenious ways – you cannot outsmart it.

So let the dead trees fall. If no sap runs, it is firewood. I will not be sentimental. Swing the axe. Shatter the mirrors. Tear off the old flesh. Get to the green. In some way, we must find water. This is the ruthless beauty of life.

My dear listeners and fellow travellers, I am writing again, after a period of agonized stagnancy. I bought a house and acreage with fruit trees in the country that feels sacred. I am slowly turning it into the magical kingdom that I imagined when the Baroness character first showed up in my mind. I set up my paints and moved my old, beloved piano. Royal and I have parted ways as friends. My long-stalled musical is squirming and has brought forth brilliant co-conspirators. A new album is coming, and paintings, and so much more, but at present it all feels like an approaching storm… leaves are twisting restlessly. The wind smells ominous and living things twitch and twinkle with their preparing.

I am not writing this to make promises because frankly, I’m lousy at those. I am merely reporting that I feel all of you nearby, and I thank you for calling this music into the world through me. That’s what is happening, I really believe that. So when the storm hits and the colours flash and the orchestra erupts, know that it is OUR creation.

I love you.

All the best to you in 2014

xoS

Leaves of burnt orange, morning frost, cozy sweaters – fall is upon us! It is indeed the perfect time of year to wrap ourselves in the sweet welcoming warmth of music … now where has that Ms. Sarah Slean been?

FALL SHOWS WITH STRINGS

October 16th brought Sarah and crew to Quebec City’s Palais Montcalm, a stunning venue of 1,000 plus seats. After a tense five hours where Sarah and new drummer Joshua van Tassel were stranded in Toronto due to fog, their plane finally took off landed just (literally) in time for a quick sound check and rehearsal. Luckily, Sarah brought her stellar cast of musicians from Montreal – for whom rehearsal is just a formality. You may recognize them from the Live in Montreal DVD (more on that very soon!)

It was a spectacular show thanks to Palais’ incredible team and a quintessentially warm Quebecois crowd, who enthusiastically demanded two encores. To top it off there was a clean sweep of all merchandise, leaving nothing for the next crowd in Thunder Bay! And unfortunately couriers would not deliver to Thunder Bay on Saturdays – who knew? Our sincere apologize to fans. If you were looking to purchase the show’s music, it can be found in our store, iTunes and Amazon to name a few.

Sarah hosted a dinner party for 10 in late September to test drive the facilities and everything went swimmingly… So she then hosted Thanksgiving with four, yes FOUR, generations of the Slean clan. Here is a photo of the resultant budding rock band:

Here’s a wee list of things I’ve been into lately…

The Human Face of BIG DATA: watched this documentary on a plane recently and was a-buzz with thoughts… human beings are using computers to capture massive amounts of data for almost anything that could possibly be measured. The data is shedding light on formerly dark problems, and at lightning speed. What a future we are hurtling towards… When traffic lights are hooked up to intelligent, responsive grids! When you can wear data collection devices that monitor every aspect of your health! Or if Kurzweil has his way, intelligent nano-bots in your bloodstream…

FLOTATION TANK ANYONE? – A friend of mine was describing on Facebook recently his first flotation experience and I was very intrigued… It’s basically a sensory deprivation chamber that looks like a cross between a pod and a mini-swimming pool wherein you float, in heavily salted water, in total darkness and silence for about an hour.

Always up for an investigation into consciousness, I booked a session that week. Well, when I got in there, it was calming, as you would expect. Your muscles all let go, and the temperature is regulated such that you can’t really sense where the water ends and the air begins. You’re in a cozy, non-frightening version of outer space. After what seemed like 15 minutes, my chattering mind stopped chattering as rapidly… and then it only kicked up a little spastic thought here and there, and then lo… and behold… it went utterly silent. I’m talking flatline. All that was happening was the ebbing and flowing of my breath and the steady beat of my heart. Nothing else chirping in the grey matter. Not even “Hey wow – I’m not thinking anything, anything at all!!” Zip. Zilch. Nada. In short, it was BLISSFUL. The bliss of being – pure being. When my mind faded in again, I noticed that I was smiling.

KURZWIEL – I watched an amazing documentary recently about Kurzweil and was dazzled by his ideas about the future, but also by the tragic, heart-warming drive behind his quest for immortality… He was clearly right about the exponential nature of technological change, but is he right that humans will be able to download their brains onto computers one day and merge with artificial intelligence? Part of me thinks – yes!

Dean Radin books – I’ve been reading his “Entangled Minds” and “The Conscious Universe”. Clearly on some kind of tangent… (see above J )

ZOE KAZAN – “Ruby Sparks” and “In Your Eyes”
This actress continues to blow me away. She is just amazing – arrestingly real, so genuine, so charming and flawed and human I can’t get enough of her. I believe she wrote the screenplay for Ruby Sparks as well, which was touching, smart and remarkably insightful about life and relationships. In Your Eyes is a recent film and though the ending was a bit disappointing I was fascinated with the main premise – which touches on the ideas in Dean Radin’s books; ESP, telepathy, etc.
Sarah Slean
