Perfect Sky

the injured pilot performs inspection
she turns the dials and
waits for perfection
the wind is howling all around her
she wants a moment she will never find
don’t wait for the perfect sky
the injured dancer can’t find a rhythm
something’s broken, but it’s within him
the dance is real and it never falters
you cannot see it because you’ve
closed your eyes
don’t wait, don’t wait – fly!
don’t wait for the perfect sky
the time is never right
aim for the higher height
you may not reach it
O but you might you might
so take that second guess
and turn it into yes
even though it’s
it’s never a perfect sky
the writer weeps for her faded glory
she is burdened by her story
so write a new one, let it begin with
the injured warrior walking into fire
don’t wait, don’t wait – fly!
don’t wait for the perfect sky
the time is never right
aim for the higher height
you may not reach it
O but you might you might
so take that second guess
and turn it into yes
even though it’s
it’s never a perfect sky

Every Rhythm is the Beat

when we are calling revolution
do we know just what it means?
it means inner transformation
a truth that sets you free
glory glory hallelujah
it’s happening to me
all our blood, it is the same blood
every rhythm is the beat
one Body blown to pieces
one light, the light of us
one God in all religion
one love, one love
this is the cracking of the egg shell
the shedding of the skin
no, there is no saviour out there
the saviour is within
we’re gonna break apart our own hearts
so that everyone can see
our blood, it is the same blood,
every rhythm is the beat
one Body blown to pieces
one light, the light of us
one God in all religion
one love, one love
one Body bathed in glory
light of the universe
one God and no religion
one love, one love

The Dark

we turn up our receivers
and we point them to the sky
and then we wonder,
is the emptiness alive?
I can feel it coming in like
fire in the belly,
like a prayer in the blood
working in you, the machinery of love
I can feel it coming in from
infinite ways, infinite directions
infinite ways, infinite directions
the dark
endless dark
and the whirling stars
where is love
but the human heart?
we turn up our receivers
and we listen to the mind
deep in our bones there is
a factory of light
I can feel it coming in like
fire in the belly,
like a thunder in the skull
O relentless, the machinery of love
I can feel it coming in from
infinite ways, infinite directions
infinite ways, infinite directions
the dark
endless dark
and the whirling stars
where is love
but the human heart?
if there is something more
and I matter to it
with my love let my heart
build a ladder to it

Sarah

Sarah
gone are the days of the
lonesome dove, so solitary
you are tangled in love now with
layers so deep and a reach so wide
you can’t escape it and so
goodbye, ya it hurts like hell
but you could not love him
and not lie to yourself
Sarah
Sarah
falling apart at the seams
this time you lost your bearings
so put roots in the earth now and
close up the windows the rain is come
and tears will follow, so
bear down through the winter cold
come next summer this phoenix
will unfold
Sarah
this is not the end
you will be loved again
Sarah
be not afraid of the wounded one
who comes with poems
and to drink from the fountain of
the little you know about love and God
and letting go but O,
he’s been to the shadowlands
still you want to love him,
want to hold those hands
and hear him say,
Sarah
this is not the end
you will be loved again
this is not the end
you will be loved again

Loved Well

pretty good walls and bones
to the heart I’m in
windows and doors where
the light gets in
if I get bombed out I can build it
back up again ‘cause I’ve been
loved well
I had a mother and father
who held hands
lovers who loved me and real friends
had a ride home, a shoulder,
a second chance, I was
loved well
but hey, despite all of this
how I have my brokenness
it’s as certain as the moon
but you’ve got no walls to keep
the winter out
you’re bleeding a trail into
the frozen ground
going from woman to woman
and town to town, you weren’t
loved well
you had no one to hold you
when the hard rain fell
too early on caught a glimpse of hell
and the heat of your heart
turned upon itself, you weren’t
loved well
but hey, it ain’t over yet
there’s so much of the movie left
it’s as certain as the moon
you can build a new heart
and a new house
and the best part is when you come out
so much will be waiting for you
you can build a new heart
and a new house
gonna take some time
but when you come out
so much of everything will be
waiting for you
build that new heart
out of new things now
the bricks and the mortar are all around
hear it whispering in the rain
as it’s falling down you’ve been
loved well
by the light of the morning,
the sighing trees,
even by the dark when
you were on your knees
by that look in her eyes
when she begs you
please, let me love you well
maybe the story goes
some things only suffering knows
it’s as certain as the moon
you can build a new heart
and a new house
and the best part is when you come out
so much will be waiting for you
you can build a new heart
and a new house
gonna take some time
but when you come out
so much of everything
will be waiting for you

A Thousand Butterflies

he lifts the roses of her secrets deftly
they leave a perfume in the air
he climbs the mountain of her hesitation
then he reaches for her there
and she feels a thousand butterflies
alight and fill the room
desire, a flame, a fire in the garden
all of her is in bloom
O the things his hands can do
she walks the meadow of his
lonesome dreaming
while the willows stand and wait
she makes a wreath of every
bending sorrow
he is watching at the gate
and he feels a thousand butterflies
alight and fill his mind
desire aflame, a fire in the garden
all of him feels alive
she does it with her eyes
love has a way of destroying
the deep disguise
you’re not the wind you’re the tree
and the way it sighs
we’ve been broken, broken open,
like a thousand butterflies
desire, a flame, a fire in the garden
there’s nowhere left to hide
desire, a flame, a fire in the garden
where are we going to hide?
we’ve been broken, broken open,
like a thousand butterflies

Holy Ground

God is looking in the mirror
into the fathomless depths of your eyes
whose tears are the only holy water
by which you will kneel and be baptized
there ain’t nobody sicker than the seeker
who hardens himself against love
perhaps that’s what I see in him
and I want to heal in him
because I see it in myself
song of sacred places raining down
everywhere you wander is holy ground
the streets, the streets are brimming
and the beggar is walking with the king
they’re groping in the dark for it
but never in the heart for it
where the only kingdom is
and the kingdom is…
song of sacred places raining down
everywhere you wander is holy ground

Not in Vain

thirty-one, I’d had my fun,
I wore my wedding shoes
it’s time I said and I filled my head
with all the other lies we use
all that night, the storm outside,
the pounding of the rain
and in my heart I knew one day
we’d go our separate ways
the more you cried the more I tried
but I could not let him go
like the dress I wore those years before
when he kissed me deep and slow
but I was tired of longing, tired of
dreaming, tired of fantasy
so I walked the aisle with a wounded
smile hoping you could set me free
and I see, as the years go by,
the mistakes that we both made
I don’t need to defend or blame,
but I need to say that it was not in vain
along the way the trials we fail
come ’round and ’round again
But if your love has made me kinder
it was not in vain
and I see, as the years go by,
the mistakes that we both made
I don’t need to defend or blame,
but I need to say that it was not in vain

The Gypsy

her skirts unfolding
her graceful profile
the sound of mourning
in her sigh
no words of wisdom,
no hallelujahs
only silence
in her eyes
she says come with me
I will show thee
no mercy
no mercy
breathe again
he’s drowning
in drunken roses
darkly blooming
on the vine
he must surrender
he begs forgiveness
and she takes him
to the night
she says come with me
I will show thee
no mercy
no mercy
breathe again
is there hatred to your love?
so take your hunger
down to the gypsy
she will teach you
how to die
but can you dance with
the Queen of Shadows
and be transparent
to the light?
she says come with me
I will show thee
no mercy
no mercy
breathe again
is there hatred to your love?

Nothing But the Light

standing alone now
standing at last
after the war and the
winter have passed
blood in the fields
and trembling fires
but all, all is forgiven
breathe, breathe
turn your face toward the sky
there’s nothing but the light
when you were falling
you were held
when all was burning
there were bells
sing out a new song the old one is gone
and love, love is beside you
breathe, breathe
all the seeming darkness is disguise
there’s nothing but the light
so this is a schoolyard and
no one survives
the terrible beauty of being alive
let it move you, let it come through
the stream is never-ending
breathe, breathe
eternity is written into time
there’s nothing but the light
